Afenifere Slams Tinubu’s Government for its ‘Insensitive Policies’

Afenifere Slams Tinubu’s “Insensitive Policies” and Removal of Petrol Subsidy

The Apex Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has strongly criticized the “insensitive policies” of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, particularly the sudden removal of petrol subsidy and the complete disregard for its impact on the people and the economy.

In a statement released on Friday by Secretary General Sola Ebiseni, Afenifere expressed concerns over the state of the economy, which is already suffering from hyperinflation, unemployment, mass hunger, and poverty. The group drew comparisons to Dante’s Hell, stating that the situation feels like an ongoing nightmare.

Although Afenifere endorsed Tinubu during the February 25, 2023 poll, they cannot remain silent in the face of this latest blow to the citizenry. The group believes that the careless implementation of such a thoughtless policy and its unintended consequences will only worsen Nigeria’s economic decline. Afenifere warned that Nigeria has officially overtaken India as the new poverty capital of the world.

Tinubu’s Inauguration Gift Sparks Widespread Outrage

On May 29, 2023, President Bola Tinubu, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), shocked Nigerians with a historic speech at the Eagle Square, where he announced the removal of petrol subsidy. As a result, the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, skyrocketed from N184 per litre to N500, and later exceeded N600. This sudden increase in petrol prices comes at a time when food prices and transportation costs are already soaring.

In addition to the removal of petrol subsidy, the Tinubu government also floated the naira against the dollar and other foreign currencies, causing the exchange rate to surge to over N850 for one dollar.

Afenifere Calls for More Considerate Approach

Afenifere acknowledges that there is a general consensus that the petrol subsidy regime, as it has been managed in the past eight years, is economically unsustainable and counterproductive. However, the group expresses disappointment in the abrupt manner in which the subsidy was removed, without any consideration for its impact on the people and the economy.

The statement by Afenifere reads, “Such a significant economic decision, with the potential to seriously harm the already impoverished citizens, should not have been made in such a casual manner.”

Afenifere also criticizes the government’s plan to distribute palliatives in the form of cash, stating that it demonstrates a lack of understanding of the current realities and the dire needs of the populace. The group suggests that instead of providing cash, the government should focus on implementing sustainable measures to alleviate the suffering of the masses across the country.

The group emphasizes the need for all leaders, especially those responsible for the wasteful expenditure of public funds, to make sacrifices to restore the fiscal viability of the country.
