The Nigerian Army Denies Detaining Soldier for Religious Conversion

The Nigerian Army has refuted claims that one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Musa Adamu, was arrested for converting from Islam to Christianity. In a statement released on Tuesday, the Army clarified that Adamu, who was attached to the Amphibious Training School and 63 Brigade, was found preaching in uniform on a social media platform in violation of the Armed Forces’ Social Media policy.

The Army stated, “This prompted his invitation for interrogation by relevant authorities.” However, instead of presenting himself for the investigation, Adamu went AWOL for about six and a half months. As a result, he was declared to be on Absence Without Official Leave (AWOL), a violation of Section 58 (a) (b) Obstruction of Provost Officers and Section 59 (a) (b) Absence Without Leave.

  1. The soldier’s actions violated military regulations, resulting in his salary account being frozen until his return and subsequent arraignment.
  2. The Army has taken Adamu into custody for investigation in accordance with the Armed Forces Act CAP 20.
  3. The Army’s actions are guided by ethics, traditions, and military laws, which apply to all personnel regardless of their religious beliefs.
