Today marks an important day for Nigeria’s legislative arm of government, as a new Senate President, Deputy Senate President, Speaker, and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives are expected to emerge from the 10th National Assembly. The inauguration process for both chambers is being held concurrently at the Red and Green Chambers, which has already brought in top contenders for the principal seats in each legislative chamber.
Who’s Who Among Contenders
Some notable individuals who arrived at the venue ahead of the in-house election this morning include the outgoing Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume, the immediate past Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, and Adams Oshiomhole.
Others currently at the National Assembly include Godswill Akpabio, Barau Jibrin, and many others.
Interestingly, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is also expected to make an appearance, as he is scheduled to inaugurate the legislative arm of government.
As expected, the security around the National Assembly complex has been tightened significantly. All Senators-elect and House of Representatives members-elect set to be inaugurated are now subject to a stringent security procedure.
