Former Imo Governor Rochas Okorocha Survives Assassination Attempt, Police Officer Killed
Former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has narrated how he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt when his convoy was attacked by gunmen in the Ihube community on the Okigwe-Enugu expressway. Speaking about the ordeal, Okorocha, who is now a senator in Nigeria’s National Assembly said, “I am angry. I am very angry.” He was traveling with a security convoy on his way back to Enugu after attending the burial ceremony of the wife of former Senate President Ken Nnamani.
The former governor revealed that the attack happened after he had attended the funeral ceremony at Mbaise, during which the Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, had released vehicles and security men to take him and his team to Imo state’s capital, Owerri, for the burial ceremony of Emeka Ihedioha’s mother. Ihedioha served as the immediate past governor of Imo State.
Okorocha added that he was embittered because he met a safe state in Enugu only to be attacked and have a security agent killed in his own state. A police officer was killed, and two other security agents were kidnapped by the gunmen who attacked the convoy.
The former governor said, “What is happening in Imo state makes me angry. Many people who are running to govern Imo state are not capable but I have seen one man who the cap fits. When it is time, I will speak.”
The birthday anniversary celebration of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate for the November 11 gubernatorial election in Imo state, Samuel Anyanwu, provided the forum for Okorocha’s statement. The event held on Sunday at Amaimo in the Ikeduru Local Government Area of the state.
Although the reasons behind the attack are still unknown, Okorocha’s statement indicates that there is work to be done to make Imo State safer.
