Cracking the Code: Unveiling the Secrets of Threads, Meta’s Game-Changing ‘Twitter Killer’

Threads: Instagram’s Attempt to Rival Twitter

The battle between Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk continues as Threads, a new app built as a challenger to Twitter, gains traction in the market. With millions of downloads already secured, the question on everyone’s mind is whether this Instagram-based platform can truly dethrone its troubled competition.

What is Threads?

Threads, a text-based sidekick of Instagram, was created to complement the image-heavy social network that Facebook acquired over a decade ago. Being a Threads user requires signing up for Instagram, as Mark Zuckerberg aims to ultimately reach one billion users, about half of Instagram’s current base. The app can be easily downloaded from Instagram, allowing users to replicate their account with just a few clicks. This seamless transition has propelled Threads to become the fastest downloaded app ever on Apple’s app store. Upon signing in, users inherit the same handle and followers they have on Instagram. Verified Instagram accounts are also verified on Threads. However, it’s important to note that deleting a Threads account also means erasing the Instagram account.

Is it Similar to Twitter?

If you’re not a fan of Twitter, you might not find solace in Threads either, as its user interface is reminiscent of the social media giant. Mark Zuckerberg even made a meme tweet on Twitter, poking fun at the similarities between the two. Threads allows users 500 characters per post, the ability to add pictures and five minutes of video, and engage in replies, similar to Twitter’s basic features. However, Threads is currently missing search functionality, hashtags, and a following-only feed. What users see is generated by an algorithm, rather than being dependent on who they follow. Instagram’s CEO, Adam Mosseri, stated that his team is diligently working to add these features as quickly as possible.

Why not in Europe?

Threads’ release coincides with the implementation of major regulations governing big tech companies in the European Union, notably the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Since the DMA prohibits the merging of personal data across multiple products, the combination of Threads and Instagram would violate this rule. Mosseri deemed these challenges in Europe to be too substantial and claimed that it would take months to find a viable solution.

What About Data Privacy?

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has a tarnished reputation when it comes to handling personal data. In an effort to regain trust while maximizing profits, Meta’s revenue model heavily relies on targeted advertising, which requires significant amounts of personal data. Threads’ terms of service align with Meta’s business model, granting the platform permissions to closely track users’ internet usage. However, this approach poses a considerable challenge for European regulators who prioritize data privacy.

Who’s Joining?

As Threads opened its doors, a select group of celebrities, journalists, and companies were granted early VIP access, adding a touch of glamour to the platform’s launch. Singers Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, basketball player Stephen Curry, creator Pharrell Williams, and talk show icon Oprah Winfrey have all joined Threads and actively posted messages. Additionally, companies such as Netflix, Spotify, Amazon, and Coca-Cola have created official Threads accounts. However, some of Instagram’s most prominent account holders, including Lionel Messi, Dwayne Johnson, Justin Bieber, and Beyonce, have yet to venture onto the Threads platform.
