DSS Takes Emefiele to Court: Shocking Development Unveiled

The Department of State Services (DSS) has announced that it has charged the suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, to court. This comes after a court order mandated the secret police to either charge Emefiele within one week or release him.

The DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, confirmed that Emefiele has indeed been charged, but did not disclose the court where the charges were filed or provide details about the allegations. Afunanya stated that the charges were based on suspected fresh criminal infractions/information that led to Emefiele’s arrest in June 2023.

The DSS spokesperson assured the public of professionalism, justice, and fairness in handling Emefiele’s case.

Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court had earlier issued an ultimatum to the DSS, instructing them to either charge Emefiele or release him. The judge emphasized that Emefiele cannot be held in detention without a formal charge and that the DSS cannot use the period of detention to search for evidence.

Emefiele had filed a fundamental human rights lawsuit against the DSS and the Attorney General of the Federation, seeking the enforcement of his freedom of movement and dignity. In the suit, Emefiele requested that his arrest and detention since June 10 be deemed void and set aside. He also demanded compensation for his alleged unlawful detention.

President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele as the CBN chief on June 9, 2023, appointing the Deputy Governor of Operations, Folashodun Shonubi, as the acting governor. The DSS confirmed Emefiele’s custody the following day, and he has remained in their custody ever since.

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, advised the DSS not to mishandle the case and suggested that the DSS should investigate Emefiele for alleged terror financing and transfer him to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for prosecution related to alleged money laundering.
