Dutch Coach Ten Hag Emphasizes Maguire’s Vital Role at Manchester United

Manchester United Boss Explains Decision to Strip Harry Maguire of Captaincy

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has expressed his respect for Harry Maguire after removing him from the captaincy role. Despite being out of favor, Ten Hag believes that Maguire is still an essential player for the team.

Maguire’s playing time was limited to just eight Premier League starts last season, leading to speculation about his future with the English giants. In a Twitter post, Maguire expressed his disappointment but pledged to continue giving his all for the team. The decision to make Bruno Fernandes the new captain was made by Ten Hag, replacing the 30-year-old defender.

“We respect Harry. Harry’s very important for this squad, for this team,” said Ten Hag in an interview with MUTV, where he explained his reasons for appointing Fernandes as the captain. “And, you know, in his role as a center-back, we have four center-backs. I talked about consistency, and we know we can’t do it with just 11 players, so I’m happy we have four very good center-backs. And we will need them, and he has to fight for his place, as he did last year. He has high potential, so I’m sure he will fight for his place, and then it’s up to him.”

Ten Hag praised Fernandes for his leadership qualities, stating, “A good team is always composed of leaders, team players, multi-functional players, specialists, and individualists. But you need some leaders on the pitch, guiding the team, building the team, and controlling the quality of the performance. And one has to wear the armband, and we chose Bruno because he is a great inspiration. He is the example.”

Raphael Varane, another player on the Manchester United team, supports the manager’s decision. In an interview with ESPN, Varane said, “He wants a team with character, and he’s the leader, so he has to show it himself. He’s not scared to take these decisions and take that responsibility. That is what we expect from the manager. He did it, so I think, with things like this, you show by example.”

Varane also spoke highly of Ten Hag’s clear vision and determination, saying, “He knows exactly what he wants. He’s shown that determination, and from the first day, we’ve known exactly what we’ve had to do and where he wants to go. It’s all clear for the players and for the team, and we have a good connection with the manager.”
