Explosive Growth: Twitter Rival Threads Attracts a Whopping 100 Million Users in Just Five Days

The Threads app, launched by Instagram as a direct competitor to Twitter, has achieved a remarkable milestone by attracting over 100 million users in less than five days. This achievement smashes the record previously held by AI tool ChatGPT for the fastest-growing consumer app.

ChatGPT took two months to reach the 100 million user mark, while popular video-sharing app TikTok took nine months. It is worth noting that Instagram itself, after its 2010 launch, took two and a half years to achieve the same milestone.

Threads was made available on both Apple and Android app stores in 100 countries last Wednesday. However, it is not currently accessible in Europe due to concerns from parent company Meta regarding compliance with the European Union’s data privacy legislation.

Twitter is estimated to have around 200 million regular users. However, since Elon Musk acquired the platform last year and implemented staff layoffs, it has experienced repeated technical failures. Musk, who also heads Tesla and SpaceX, has encountered criticism for introducing charges for previously free services and allowing banned right-wing accounts to return to the platform.

Although several rival platforms have emerged, most of them are niche platforms that lack the capacity to grow at the scale necessary to challenge Twitter’s dominance.

The advantage Threads enjoys lies in its connection to Instagram, which boasts over one billion regular users.

According to online data service Quiver Quantitative, the app exceeded 100 million users at 0700 GMT on Monday. However, other websites, which counted the badges received by Instagram users who downloaded Threads, believe the milestone was reached earlier.

Elon Musk has threatened to sue Meta, which owns Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, for alleged theft of trade secrets and intellectual property. Meta denies these claims. The rivalry between Musk and Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has even led to public exchanges where they challenged each other to a cage fight.

The accomplishment of Threads in attracting a massive number of users is undoubtedly an impressive feat, especially given the short time span since its launch. It remains to be seen how this new rival to Twitter will continue to perform in the ever-evolving world of social media.
