Gasping for Air: Ohale’s Terrifying Ordeal After Scoring Epic Goal Against Australia

Super Falcons’ Ohale Shares Experience After Scoring in Nigeria’s Win over Australia at 2023 Women’s World Cup

Super Falcons defender, Osinachi Ohale, has opened up about her experience after scoring in Nigeria’s thrilling victory over Australia at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. The defender’s goal played a pivotal role in the Falcons’ 3-2 win over the Matildas.

Ohale courageously put her body on the line to score Nigeria’s second goal after capitalizing on Australia’s goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold’s inability to handle a Rasheedat Ajibade header. Despite being on the receiving end of Alanna Kennedy’s clearance kick, Ohale managed to firmly place the ball into the back of the net.

“It was crazy. I was struggling to breathe. I could not catch my breath. My teammates did not know what was happening to me,” Ohale recounted in an interview with Channels Television. “They came jumping at me and all of that. It was when they realized [I was injured] that they backed off, but I am happy I got the goal for my team and I finished the game.”

Ohale, who received treatment after the incident, described the moments as “crazy.” However, her determination to continue the match and her commitment to the team were admirable.

The Nigerian defender’s outstanding performance earned her the Player of the Match award. This was her second-ever goal for the Super Falcons, and she joins a small group of Nigerian players who have won the accolade. Chiamaka Nnadozie previously received the honor in the team’s draw against Olympic champions Canada.

Ohale’s goal was crucial in securing Nigeria’s victory, which has made the Falcons’ journey in the tournament even more exciting. With one more group stage match against Ireland on Monday, the team only needs a point to advance to the knockout phase for the second consecutive World Cup.
