Gov. Sule: Families Thrilled by Proposed N8,000 Subsidy Palliative, Will it be Enough?

The Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, disagrees with critics who argue that the proposed N8,000 palliative by the Federal Government won’t do much to cushion the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy on poor Nigerians. He believes that N8,000 is a significant amount for many impoverished families who don’t typically see that much money in a month.

During his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Governor Sule mentioned that in his state, they were previously distributing only N5,000 as a monthly stipend, and even then, many people were relying on it. Some communities were even able to make contributions from those funds to improve their own communities. So, while N8,000 may not seem like much to some, it can make a significant difference to those who come from extremely poor families.

  1. In a meeting held on Thursday, the National Executive Council (NEC) agreed on palliative measures for Nigerians.

The meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima and attended by governors from all 36 states of the Federation, decided that cash transfers would be made through state social registers rather than national social registers, taking into account the specific needs of each state.

  1. However, Governor Sule acknowledged that there were issues with the national social register, as some individuals who shouldn’t be eligible were still receiving funds from the government.

While Governor Sule emphasized that they are not advocating for the complete abandonment of the national social register, he believes that necessary amendments should be made to address these issues. He stated that both new and experienced governors have been complaining about the problems and that they should be rectified.

The Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, proposed to transfer N8,000 to 12 million poor households in Nigeria for a period of six months as a means to alleviate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal. The President believes that the money transfer would have a positive ripple effect, benefiting approximately 60 million individuals in total. The President also assures the public that the funds will be transferred digitally to ensure transparency and credibility.
