Imo Govt Boosts Minimum Wage to N40,000 Amid Subsidy Removal

Imo State Government Raises Minimum Wage of Workers to N40,000

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has taken steps to soften the blow of the fuel subsidy removal by increasing the minimum wage of workers in the state to N40,000. Speaking at a strategic stakeholders meeting in Owerri, the state capital, Governor Uzodimma also announced a N5 billion soft loan for farmers to boost their productivity.

Governor Uzodimma Addresses the Suffering of Imo People

During the meeting, Governor Uzodimma shared several other measures that his administration will implement to alleviate the hardships faced by the people of Imo State across various sectors. He expressed his concern for the welfare of the citizens, especially those with low incomes, and emphasized the need to address their sufferings.

In his own words, Governor Uzodimma stated, “I have watched with keen interest how our people have been faring since the removal of the subsidy on fuel was announced. I can tell you that I am deeply worried by my observations. It is clear to me that our people are suffering, particularly the low-income earners.”

Immediate Salary Increase and Wage Adjustment

In order to mitigate the effects of the fuel subsidy removal, Governor Uzodimma unveiled several initiatives. The first among them is an immediate upward review of salaries and wages of workers in the state. The minimum wage has been raised to N40,000, and there will be discretionary and consequential adjustments for workers at other levels.

This move comes as a response to President Bola Tinubu’s removal of subsidy payment on petrol during his inauguration on May 29, 2023. As a result, the pump price per litre of fuel skyrocketed from N184 to over N500.
