Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate supports Bill Gates’ statement on Nigerian diaspora
The LP Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has backed Bill Gates on his recent comment on the trend of Nigerians seeking greener pastures overseas. Gates, who described the trend as the so-called “Japa” syndrome, said that the increasing number of Nigerians and professionals leaving Nigeria was beneficial for the country. Obi shared his position and tweeted that the knowledge and expertise they had acquired would be invaluable in the rebuilding of a new Nigeria. He maintained that “our brain drain today will be our brain gain tomorrow.”
India’s approach to the tech industry
Obi also cited India’s success in the technology industry, saying that India’s ability to harness the knowledge and resources of Indians in the diaspora for national growth had propelled its success. India currently has some of the world’s top engineers and computer scientists, and many of the biggest global tech firms are headed by CEOs of Indian origin. Nigeria, according to Obi, could benefit in the same way if it rebuilds and prioritizes investment in education, health, and assistance for small-scale businesses. Nigerians in the diaspora would then return home with their international training, knowledge and resources to contribute meaningfully to national development.
