Katsina Teaching Hospital and Two Other Institutions Embrace Patients’ Bill of Rights – A Major Leap for Healthcare!

The Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina, along with two other reputable healthcare providers in the city, has taken a significant step in prioritizing patient rights. The Patients’ Bill of Rights, supported by the Federal Competition & Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), has been domesticated at these three medical facilities including Heritage Specialty Clinic and K-Dara Specialist Clinic.

The visit by FCCPC officials to Katsina serves as a continuation of their advocacy for patients’ rights. The Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Babatunde Irukera, strongly believes that implementing this bill will undoubtedly enhance the quality of healthcare. He has engaged various stakeholders, including outpatient facilities, traditional and government institutions, the media, CSOs, and consumer protection associations, to garner support for this advocacy process.

The Chief Medical Director of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina, Dr. Suleiman Mohammed, expressed that most of these patients’ rights are already being practiced at their facility. He eagerly embraces the domestication of the bill, stating that the hospital ensures services are provided to all patients, regardless of their financial status. The hospital has an active Servicom unit that addresses patients’ complaints and finds suitable solutions for them. Dr. Mohammed assures the general public and all the hospital staff that the patients’ rights will be respected, disseminating this information to all workers to guarantee the best care for every patient.

During their visit, the FCCPC also paid homage to the Emir of Katsina, HRH Abdulmumini Usman, seeking his blessings. The Emir, expressing his top priorities, vowed to support the Patient’s Bill of Rights, highlighting the significance of security, the medical sector, and education. He emphasized the importance of a cordial doctor-patient relationship, urging doctors to be accommodating and vigilant.

The primary objective of the Patient’s Bill of Rights is to improve the quality of care and enhance patient outcomes. It is a comprehensive document that outlines the rights and privileges of individuals seeking medical care. The bill serves as a guide to ensure that patients receive the highest quality of care while being treated with respect and dignity.

Key provisions of the Patients’ Bill of Rights include:

  1. Right to relevant information in a language and manner that the patient understands, including diagnosis, treatment, and possible outcomes.
  2. Right to timely access to detailed and accurate medical records and available services.
  3. Right to transparent billing and full disclosure of costs, including recommended treatment plans.
  4. Right to be treated with respect, regardless of gender, race, religion, ethnicity, allegations of crime, disability, or economic circumstances.
  5. Right to receive urgent, immediate, and sufficient intervention and care in the event of an emergency.
  6. Right to complain and express dissatisfaction regarding services received.
  7. Right to a clean, safe, and secure healthcare environment.
  8. Right to quality care in accordance with prevailing standards.
  9. Right to decline or consent to participation in medical research, experimental procedures, or clinical trials, among others.

Implementing the Patients’ Bill of Rights will foster a relationship of trust and empathy between healthcare providers and those under their care. It empowers vulnerable patients to make informed decisions about their medical conditions, ensuring that none of their rights are violated.
