LeBron James Declares: No Plans of Retiring Anytime Soon!

NBA star LeBron James puts retirement rumors to rest, reaffirming his love for basketball and stating that he is not yet ready to hang up his jersey. After the Los Angeles Lakers lost in the Western Conference final to the Denver Nuggets in May, James expressed uncertainty about his future in the sport. However, during his acceptance speech at the ESPY awards ceremony, he quashed any doubts about his commitment to the game.

James, who received the award for Best Record-Breaking Performance for surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the league’s all-time leading scorer, emphasized that what matters to him is not scoring more points or showcasing his abilities on the court, but rather playing the game without cheating.

  1. “The real question for me is: Can I play without cheating this game? The day I can’t give everything on the floor is the day I’ll be done. Lucky for you guys, that day is not today.”

  2. “In my 20 years playing this game and all the years before, I’ve never, ever cheated the game and I will never take it for granted.”

Despite being 39 by December, James dismissed speculations about playing alongside his sons, particularly his eldest son Bronny James, who will start college basketball at the University of Southern California next season and could potentially join the NBA in 2024-2025. Nevertheless, he attributed part of his enthusiasm for the game to coaching his sons and their teammates.

“You know what brings me back every year? It’s watching and coaching my boys and their teammates. I see those kids and it brings me right back to why I play. Those kids get me back to where I need to be, just the pure love of this beautiful game. So, yeah, I still got something left. A lot left,” said James.

James addressed the contemplation he had after the Lakers’ loss to the Nuggets and revealed that he had been questioning his future in the sport privately for a couple of years.

  1. “When the season ended, I said I wasn’t sure if I was going to keep playing and I know a lot of experts told you guys what I said but I’m here now speaking for myself.”

  2. “In that moment, I’m asking myself if I can still play without cheating the game — can I give everything to the game still? The truth is, I’ve been asking myself this question at the end of the season for a couple years now. I just never openly talked about it.”

The 36-year-old superstar signed a two-year contract extension with the Lakers in August 2020, securing his place with the team until the 2024-2025 season.
