Major Blow for Maguire as Man Utd Captaincy Ripped Away by Ten Hag

Harry Maguire steps down as Manchester United captain after talks with manager Erik ten Hag

Harry Maguire has confirmed that he is no longer the captain of Manchester United following discussions with manager Erik ten Hag. Speculation had been rife after reports earlier this month suggested that the England international would be stripped of the captaincy due to his limited appearances under the Dutch boss last season. Maguire made just eight Premier League starts, sparking uncertainty about his future with the club.

Maguire took to Twitter to make the announcement, writing, “After discussions with the manager today he has informed me he is changing captain. He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.”

The 30-year-old went on to express gratitude towards the Manchester United fans, saying, “So I wanted to say a massive thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their brilliant support whilst I’ve been wearing the armband. Since the day I took on the role, three-and-a-half years ago, it’s been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career to date. It’s one of the greatest honours in club football. I’ve done everything I possibly could to help United be successful — on and off the field. I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for first giving me the responsibility and I wish whoever now takes it on every success and they will have my full support.”

Bruno Fernandes, who frequently served as captain in Maguire’s absence last season, is the favorite to be given the role on a permanent basis. Maguire, who was signed from Leicester for a record-breaking £80 million in 2019, has made over 170 appearances for Manchester United. However, the past two seasons have seen him become the subject of social media ridicule due to some high-profile errors on the pitch. Nevertheless, he has remained a regular for the England national team under Gareth Southgate.

Maguire’s first-team opportunities at Old Trafford were further limited last season with the arrival of Lisandro Martinez from Argentina. Consequently, there have been recent rumors linking him with a move to Premier League rivals West Ham.
