Super Eagles’ 2023 AFCON Qualification Secured with Stunning Victory
The Super Eagles of Nigeria beat Sierra Leone 3-2 during their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia, Liberia. This astonishing victory was achieved with one game to spare and was sealed with two remarkable goals scored by Victor Osimhen, with an additional strike made by Kelechi Iheanacho.
The Eagles took control of the first half with Osimhen netting the first goal in the 19th minute after he beautifully met a long ball and lobbed it over the helpless Sierra Leone goalkeeper.
Not satisfied with just one goal, Osimhen went on to score his second in the 32nd minute, thanks to a precise pass by Joe Aribo. The Eagles were sitting comfortably on a 2-0 lead, but they dropped their guard, allowing the Leone Stars to get one goal back just before halftime.
In the second half, the Leone Stars continued to pile on the pressure and eventually equalized in the 84th minute. However, the Eagles were determined to win and their efforts paid off when Saidu Sanusi ran through the opposition defence in added time, setting up Iheanacho to score Nigeria’s winning goal.
Following this outstanding win, Nigeria leads the group with a total of 12 points from five games, with Guinea-Bissau coming in behind them with 10 points.
