NLC Slams N500bn Palliatives as Robbing the Poor to Feed the Rich

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly criticized the Federal Government’s plan to distribute N500bn as palliatives to Nigerians and government officials in response to the removal of fuel subsidy. In a statement issued by its President, Joe Ajaero, the NLC condemned the government’s actions, accusing it of impoverishing the people and prioritizing the interests of the rich.

The NLC expressed its dissatisfaction with the decision of the Tinubu-led administration to seek approval from the National Assembly for an additional N500bn loan from the World Bank. It argued that this loan was being used to carry out a “phantom” palliative measure to offset the effects of the increased prices of Premium Motor Spirit.

  1. The NLC highlighted the discrepancy in the proposed distribution of funds, stating that the government’s proposal to provide N8,000 to each of the so-called 12 million poorest Nigerian households for six months was insulting and mocked the collective intelligence of the people.
  2. The labor organization also criticized the allocation of N70bn to National Assembly members and N36bn to the judiciary, calling it a diversion of public funds and an act of insensitivity towards the plight of the people.
  3. The NLC expressed concerns that these proposed payments to the other arms of government may be seen as hush money and outright bribery to secure their compliance.
  4. It condemned the government’s attempt to reward the rich in public office while neglecting the poor, describing it as a way to further impoverish the less privileged.

The NLC emphasized that the proposed payment of N8,000 to each of the poorest 12 million households for six months, while allocating significant amounts to National Assembly members and the judiciary, reflects the government’s intention to rob the poor to further enrich the rich.
