Renowned Human Rights Lawyer, Falana, Urges University Authorities to Halt Skyrocketing School Fees Plan

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has called on federal universities to immediately suspend plans to increase tuition and school fees. Falana argues that the majority of people have been impoverished by the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

Falana’s statement, signed by Tayo Soyemi on behalf of Falana and Falana Chambers, highlights that federal universities cannot impose astronomical tuition fees on students since the 1975 policy abolishing payment of tuition fees in federal tertiary institutions has not been lifted.

Falana further emphasizes that the payment of school fees in junior secondary schools is illegal, as both the Compulsory, Free Universal Basic Education Act and the Child’s Rights Act impose a legal obligation on the federal and state governments to provide free, compulsory, and universal basic education for every child from primary to junior secondary level.

Falana also criticizes the lack of consideration for physically challenged individuals in implementing the new education policy, stating that it is illegal to collect school fees from such students.

According to Channels Television, several universities, including the University of Lagos, have increased tuition fees for new and returning undergraduate students. The institution cited the prevailing economic realities as justification for the adjustment.

In a statement released on Friday, the University of Lagos explained that the fee adjustment, which will take effect from the 1st Semester of the 2023/2024 Academic Session, is necessary for the university to meet its obligations to its students, staff, and service providers.
