The House of Representatives is dedicated to doing everything in its power to resolve the ongoing dispute between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, according to Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila.
Gbajabiamila had already called a conference of interested parties to address the problem that had resulted in professors closing the universities for more than seven months.
The Speaker has extended invitations to the National Leadership of ASUU, the Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, the Ministers of Labour, Employment, and Productivity, Chris Ngige, and Adamu Adamu, the Minister of Education.
The National Assembly returned from its two-month annual recess on Tuesday, September 20th, 2022 and Gbajabiamila made his remarks at the beginning of session. He emphasized that the MPs owe the intervention to Nigerian youths and Nigeria’s future.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government have been engaged in a protracted dispute, and the House now needs to step in. Disagreements over staff employment terms and university finance in general are the main causes of the current impasse.
According to Gbajabiamila, he will meet with ASUU representatives this afternoon along with the House leadership and the pertinent committees. The goal was to investigate all alternatives available to parliament and assist in resolving the current crisis so that the kids could start school again.
He continued that it has been recognized that the key to unlocking prosperity and enhancing social mobility outcomes in any country is access to education more than anything else. And it is concurred that the government must play a part in ensuring that the young people of the country receive a quality education that will enable them to compete and prosper in the knowledge economy of the twenty-first century.
He concluded by saying tha there is ample proof that the current system of publicly funded university education is ineffective and has been for a very long time. The top priority right now is getting our kids back in the classroom. The time has also arrived to start evaluating the current system honestly and to start thinking about all of the possibilities for comprehensive reform. This is something they owe to the future of the country and their kids.
