Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat Unveil Sole Witness Dibal to Defend Jandor’s Powerful Petition

Lagos State Governor, Babajide SanwoOlu and his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, had a strong defense presented on Tuesday at the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal. They called their sole witness, Adamu Shettima Yuguda Dibal, a former Borno State Deputy Governor who chaired the Lagos State governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The petition filed by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Dr. Olajide Adediran, raised concerns about the eligibility of Sanwo-Olu, Hamzat, and the Labour Party candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, to contest in the election. Adediran alleged non-compliance with the Electoral Act and guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by the APC and LP candidates. He also accused Sanwo-Olu of presenting a forged WAEC certificate to INEC and accused Hamzat of swearing allegiance to another country without including his oath of declaration in his INEC Nomination Form.

  1. The witness, Adamu Dibal, defended the APC primaries before the tribunal, stating that the Lagos State APC Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, followed electoral regulations when he notified INEC of the party’s primary election.

Under cross-examination, the witness clarified that the national or state office of the APC conducts a governorship primary election according to the party’s guidelines, and that the National Working Committee sets up state committees to carry out the process in all 36 states.

  1. Mr. Dibal provided evidence of INEC’s presence at the primary election and their subsequent signing of a report on its conduct. This was confirmed by representatives from INEC’s headquarters and the Lagos office.

With no cross-examination from the counsel representing Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the witness was discharged by the tribunal, which adjourned to Wednesday, July 12 for the APC to present its defense.
