Super Eagles’ Awoniyi Sets Ambitious Goal: Winning AFCON Trophy in Ivory Coast

Super Eagles Striker Aims for AFCON 2024 Trophy

Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, has set his sights on winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in January 2024 in Ivory Coast. The Nigerian team suffered a disappointing exit in the second round of the previous edition in Cameroon in 2022. In an interview with Channels Television, Awoniyi expressed the team’s determination to secure victory in the upcoming tournament.

“I think everyone in the squad is happy, the first stage is to qualify for the AFCON which we did already, then the next stage now is just to try everything possible to win the AFCON which is the target for the country.

The last one was an experience, I was there and we are happy we are there again and of course, we want to go there and we want to win the trophy for sure,”

Said Awoniyi, who also plays for English Premier League side, Nottingham Forest. He acknowledged the tough competition at AFCON but emphasized the hunger for success within the Super Eagles’ current roster. The team secured qualification for the tournament with a 3-2 victory over Sierra Leone, courtesy of goals from Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho.

Reflecting on his first season with Nottingham Forest, where he played a crucial role in helping the team remain in the Premier League, Awoniyi admitted that the initial stages were challenging. However, he considered the season a success, as Forest maintained its top-flight status.

Awoniyi, who joined Forest from Union Berlin in the German Bundesliga, revealed that a meeting with coach Steve Cooper convinced him to make the move to the Premier League side. Addressing transfer rumors, he clarified that he remains under contract with Forest for five years and intends to have an even better season ahead.

Last season, Awoniyi scored ten goals for Forest, contributing significantly to the team’s survival in the top flight following their return in 2022 after spending several years in the Championship.
