President Bola Tinubu emerges as new ECOWAS Chair, prioritizes democracy and peace

President Bola Tinubu has been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government. Tinubu, who took office on May 29, 2023, is the latest addition to the prestigious club of West African Heads of State. In his acceptance speech, he emphasized the importance of democracy and the urgent need to address security challenges in the region.

Commitment to Democracy and Peace

President Tinubu expressed his dedication to democracy and stressed its significance in ensuring good governance, freedom, and the rule of law. He condemned the emerging trend of military takeovers and emphasized the need for ECOWAS to stand firm in defense of democracy. Tinubu called for a united front in putting an end to coup attempts and reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the principles of sovereignty and the rule of law.

“We will take democracy seriously, Democracy is very tough but it is the best form of government. We will not accept coup after coup in West Africa again. Democracy is very difficult to manage but it is the best form of government… We must not sit in ECOWAS as toothless bulldogs.” – President Bola Tinubu

Addressing Security Challenges

During his address, President Tinubu highlighted the grave security threats facing the sub-region and the need for urgent action. He lamented the alarming levels of terrorism, insecurity, and the negative impact it has on regional progress and development. Tinubu called for a collective and harmonized effort among member states to effectively combat terrorism and maintain peace.

“There is no governance, freedom and rule of law without Democracy. We must stand firm on democracy… As terrorists do not respect boundaries, we must work collectively to have an effective regional counterterrorism measure.” – President Bola Tinubu

President Tinubu acknowledged the existing frameworks developed by ECOWAS to address security concerns and emphasized the need for their immediate harmonization and mobilization of resources. He stressed the importance of regional cooperation in countering the menace of terrorism and firmly ensuring peace and stability.

President Bola Tinubu’s election as the Chairman of ECOWAS brings hopes of renewed commitment to the principles of democracy and regional security. With his inclusive approach and strong stance on addressing challenges, the region looks towards a brighter future under his leadership.
