Tinubu’s Inaugural Speech Excluded Fuel Subsidy, But He Had To Stop It on Day One!

President Tinubu condemns Fuel Subsidy and highlights reforms to Nigeria’s sectors in Paris

President Bola Tinubu spoke out in France recently, condemning the fuel subsidy in Nigeria as a “scam” and a disincentive to growth. The president met with Nigerian nationals living in France, who commended him for his decisive action in fixing the economy of the country. Tinubu spoke of his commitment to repositioning the education and health sectors, and highlighted ongoing reforms in the economy aimed at easing the burden of poverty and insecurity facing Nigerian families.

Addressing the gathering of professionals, which included David Alaba, a footballer, Tinubu admitted to including fuel subsidy removal in his inaugural speech, describing it as a “bone of contention” that had to be tackled. He went on to reassure Nigerians both in the diaspora and at home that the country’s interests would always be protected, even when engaging in global negotiations with governments, multilateral institutions, and on matters relating to climate change, trade, energy transition, diplomacy, and food security.

He conceded that Nigeria still faces huge challenges in the transport, electricity, infrastructure sectors, and others, and that there would have to be further innovation and creativity implemented in these areas if they were to be resolved.

Tinubu stressed that the interests of Nigerians always came first, as evidenced by his removal of fuel subsidy from Nigeria’s policies. “Our diversity is our asset, if we know how to use it,’’ he said, adding, “We must promote unity and stability for all. Whether you voted for me or not, I am your President. I will work on your behalf to ensure a turning point of prosperity.’’

The President’s meeting with Nigerians in Paris came 11 days after he signed the Students Loan Bill into law, giving many Nigerians struggling to obtain an education hope for future prosperity.

Overall, the meeting served as an opportunity for President Tinubu to reiterate his commitments to his country, outlining his policies and plans for growth, and reassuring Nigerians that he intends on delivering on his campaign promises.
