Tinubu’s Powerful Plea: African Leaders Must Embrace Democracy, Take Strong Action Against Coups

President Bola Tinubu urges African leaders to uphold democracy and respect the rule of law

President Bola Tinubu delivered a powerful message on Saturday, calling on African leaders to prioritize democracy, uphold the rule of law, and ensure political stability. Speaking at a high-level event organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Nairobi, Kenya, Tinubu also appealed to the United Nations to take a firm stance against military coups.

Tinubu, who is the Chairperson of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, stressed the need for African military institutions and states to embrace democratic renewal and strongly discouraged the occurrence of coups, especially in the midst of current challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, insecurity, and climate change.

While expressing regret, Tinubu highlighted the unfortunate reality that West Africa, despite having various instruments and mechanisms designed to promote democracy and good governance, is leading other regions in resorting to unconstitutional means to change governments.

  1. Rise in military takeovers

  2. Tinubu went on to warn that the military’s interference in the political arena is not only endangering peace, security, and stability but also leading to dire consequences such as poverty, displacement, humanitarian crises, food shortages, and heightened health challenges. He emphasized that Africa cannot make progress in achieving the UN Agenda 2030 for sustainable development and the AU Agenda 2063 for the ‘Africa We Want’ if the root causes of unconstitutional changes and coups are not addressed.

  3. Call for concerted efforts

  4. In light of the six successful coups and three unsuccessful attempts witnessed in Africa between 2020 and now, Tinubu called on all African leaders, regardless of their positions, to unite and prioritize the principles of democracy and the rule of law. Only through these concerted efforts can political stability be ensured across the continent.

Tinubu’s powerful statement, delivered by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Adamu Ibrahim Lamuwa, highlights the urgent need for Africa to break the vicious cycle of unconstitutional changes and strengthen democratic processes for the betterment of its people and the realization of its development goals.
