Tragic Building Collapse in Cameroon Claims 12 Lives – Heroes of the Hour: Firefighters

At least 12 people were killed and 21 injured, five seriously, Sunday, when a building collapsed in Cameroon’s business hub Douala, firefighters and local authorities said.

The four-storey block collapsed onto another residential building around 1:00 am (0000 GMT) in the north of the city, a senior fire brigade official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Charles Elie Zang Zang, a Douala municipal councillor, added rescue services were searching through the rubble for survivors.

Douala’s Laquintinie hospital stated it had taken in 13 patients and said two – a girl of three and a young woman of 19 – had died.

It added three other children among those injured were receiving emergency pediatric treatment.

Building collapse in Douala claims lives

At least 12 people were killed and 21 injured, five seriously, when a building collapsed in Douala, Cameroon’s business hub. The incident occurred in the north of the city at around 1:00 am (0000 GMT) on Sunday. Rescue services are currently searching through the rubble for survivors, as confirmed by Charles Elie Zang Zang, a Douala municipal councillor.

Victims taken to Laquintinie hospital

Thirteen patients were taken to Douala’s Laquintinie hospital following the building collapse. Sadly, two individuals, a three-year-old girl and a 19-year-old woman, did not survive. The hospital is currently providing emergency pediatric treatment to three other injured children.

Past incidents and building safety concerns

  1. Similar circumstances resulted in five deaths in Douala in 2016. The authorities attributed these incidents to poor repairs and apparent violations of building regulations.
  2. In June of the same year, local authorities identified 500 buildings in Douala that were at risk of collapsing.
