Lagos State Government Takes Drastic Measures to Halt Anthrax Spread
The Lagos State Government has taken bold steps to prevent the spread of Anthrax disease by confiscating, burning, and burying six infected animals. In a press statement released on Sunday, Mrs. Olutokunbo Emokpae, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, revealed that the infected animals were discovered during surveillance conducted on Lagos Island and Agege.
No Human Infections and Heightened Surveillance
No cases of human infection have been identified or reported since the Anthrax disease was discovered in Lagos. Mrs. Emokpae reassured the public that both human and animal surveillance activities have been intensified to prevent any potential outbreak. Additionally, free vaccination programs and monitoring have been further strengthened.
The Permanent Secretary strongly urged animal owners to seize the opportunity and bring their animals for inoculation. The state government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, recently initiated free vaccination campaigns for domesticated animals as a preventive measure against the prevalence of Anthrax disease in Lagos.
Public Cooperation and Caution
Highlighting the importance of public safety, the statement emphasized that individuals should refrain from approaching or touching animals suspected to be infected with the disease. The state government implored animal owners to cooperate with veterinary personnel conducting the vaccination exercises.
